I admit it: I'm a total geek. I love electronics, programming, 3D printing, 3D art, and vintage Apple hardware. I'm always juggling half a dozen projects. I also enjoy documenting it all: my successes, my failures, my experiences... and everything geeky along the way.

Android Sculpture

I was inspired by this 2008 promo image for The Sarah Connor Chronicles to make a little android prop. It'll be a fun project, but more importantly it'll give me something to practice painting. The next step in my 23" Victoria 8 figurine is to paint it so I want to practice first. I was very happy with the paint job on the first figurine that I made but I'm afraid I forgot how I pulled it off. I do have the step-by-step pictures that I took, but I'd prefer to practice on something smaller before diving right in.

I jumped into DAZ and started with a Victoria 8.1 model. I then hid most of the body parts just leaving the upper torso and then dropped in some android parts that I found online. That looks pretty good.

I then took the model into Meshmixer to do some cleanup and size the model.

I made some holes for the android parts.

I should then be able to glue them right in.

Looks good.

I then exported the parts and 3D printed them in resin.

It took 15 hours to print. The model is hollow with 1.5mm walls.

I knew I should have removed the supports that went all the way up to the eyes. I didn't think they were necessary. They were automatically generated so I left them. I should have known better and just removed them. When I popped them off, they took a little piece of the eyes with them. Other than that, the model looks great. No sanding required.

T900_002

These small parts came out great. I printed them solid.

T900_001

I then painted them black and rubbed on some graphite powder. I then gave them a clear coat.

T900_012

For the model, I first gave it two coats of primmer and a buffing with some steel wool.

T900_010

I then gave it two coats of white.

T900_011

I then painted it a light pink using acrylic paint.

T900_013

I then gave it a yellow wash and pained in some blues.

T900_022

I used some chalk pastels and brushed on some yellow, brown, and red.

I then did some detail work and attempted to paint the face. It's not bad, but those eyebrows! I have to say, eyebrows are really hard. Really, really hard. I definitely need some practice there. (And maybe some finer brushes.)

T900_045

I then jumped into SketchUp to design some sort of rig to hold the android torso.

I printed those in resin too. I made them solid so they have some weight.

T900_040

I gave them the graphite treatment too.

T900_041

I then super glued it together. It's not perfect, but this is just a silly thing that I'm throwing together just to practice painting. It does not need to be perfect. I don't want to spend too much time on it.

T900_043

I then glued in the android parts.

T900_046

The model then just hangs in the rig like that. I am really happy with the way that the paint job came out. I now just need to replicate it for the 23" figurine!
